Bikeability training for children
Bikeability, formerly known as "Cycling Proficiency", is the only Government approved award
for cycle training today. This scheme is
currently rolled out nationwide and mostly
aimed at schoolchildren aged 10 – 11
years old to give them the skills and confidence to cycle on today's
roads.
We are currently involved to deliver this
"Bikeability Level 2" training
at schools in North Devon, a project funded
by the ND PEDPASS partnership. EOS Cycle Training is accredited by the Cycle Training Standards Board to deliver courses independently, so we
are also happy to teach "Bikeability
Level 2" to children who are not in
the target age or area of the North Devon
PEDPASS partnership. Also, we are happy to
teach "Bikeability Level 1" and
"Bikeability Level 3", see below
for details and please contact us for more information.
"Bikeability Level 2" is the most important course of the
Bikeability scheme, aimed at Year 5/6 school children. This course is normally
delivered by two instructors in five 2 hour
sessions, with a group size of twelve trainees.
The course involves a check on the children's
bicycle control and balance capabilities
before they go out on the road. Most of the
course is delivered on real roads with real
traffic and instructors have been intensively
trained to minimise potential risks. Normally
we start out on very quiet roads, slowly
building up to roads with more traffic according
to the capabilities of the trainees. The
children receive a certificate for attending
the course, with individual feedback regarding
their capabilities.
If you are looking for cycle training for
children younger than 10 years old "Bikeability Level 1" is a fun option! This course is aimed
at Year 3/4 school children who are still working on
their balance and bike control skills. Note
all trainees have to be able to ride independently
to join the course. This course can be delivered
in two sessions of 75 minutes in a traffic
free environment (school playgrounds).
If you are looking for further cycle training
for
teenagers who like to extend their skills beyond "Level
2" we can provide you with "
Bikeability Level 3". On this course trainees learn how
to cycle on busy roads and how to control
traffic flows as a cyclist. This course can
be delivered to only eight trainees at the
time (with two instructors present). Personal
coaching for individual needs (regarding
route planning and specific junctions) will
be accommodated as much as possible. We recommend
at least one two hour session for such a
group.
All courses can also be booked by families
or individually! We normally charge £15 per hour for
such private sessions and more than 1 person
can take part. A private session is more
intensive than a group session, meaning it
is possible to achieve the outcomes in a
much shorter time period. As a private session
is normally with only one instructor it is
a requirement for child protection reasons
that the trainee(s) is/are accompanied by
an adult (who will have to ride a bike as
well on Level 2 and Level 3 sessions).
Please contact us for prices of group courses. Note we are always happy to tailor our courses
to your budget and needs!
Please
contact us to discuss the options!
